Pantai Cenang is where most visitors land — and where sunset dinner becomes a sport. The strip packs beach bars, live-seafood restaurants, and cafés into a walkable kilometre. The trick is knowing which ones are worth the table, not just the view.

The three to book first

The Cliff Restaurant & Bar

Perched on the headland between Cenang and Tengah, with the Andaman Sea spread out below. Malay and Western plates, seafood-forward menu, and the kind of golden-hour light that explains why people queue for terrace seats. Arrive before 6pm if you want a sunset table without a long wait.

Go for: Sunset dinner, cocktails with a view. Detail: Behind Underwater World — easy to miss from the main strip.

Orkid Ria Seafood Restaurant

A Cenang landmark since 2000. Lobster, crab, and tiger prawns from tanks at the entrance, weighed in front of you and cooked Chinese-style with Malay touches. Loud, busy, and exactly what you want after a beach day.

Go for: Live seafood feast with a group. Detail: Prices are by weight — ask before you point.

Smiling Buffalo Cafe

The quieter counterpoint on the same coast. Garden seating, brunch plates, and a menu that works for travellers who want something lighter than a seafood blowout. Good for late breakfast before the heat sets in.

Go for: Brunch, coffee, shaded garden tables. Detail: Slower pace than the clifftop spots — plan to linger.

How to plan the evening

Walk the strip once before you commit. Sunset spots fill between 5:30 and 7pm; live-seafood places peak later. If you only have one sunset dinner on the island, The Cliff is the default — Orkid Ria if your group wants tanks and sharing plates.
